TUT break their Shield duck

FNB TUT managed to get their first win of the 2013 FNB Varsity Shield when they beat FNB UWC 18-8 in Pretoria on Monday evening.

The side from Pretoria started the game well and scored the first try after just four minutes when flyhalf Morne Hugo went over, he also kicked the first conversion which meant the Vikings took a 8-0 lead.

The score would not change going into the half-time break as neither side could dominate possession or territory.

The Vikings showed more confidence in the second period of the game and scored first after the break when wing Fanie Raseroka went over for another try which was also converted by the pin-point boot of Hugo.

TUT did not help their cause in the 50th minute when reserve prop Terence Long was given a yellow-card for foul play and had to spend ten minutes in the sin-bin.

This did not influence how TUT played the game and managed to open the gap further on UWC with a Hugo penalty to take their lead to 18-0 with 25 minutes left on the clock.

UWC were not going to lie down and kept fighting and came away with a try of their own after they ran the length of the field to score through centre Kenwin Weiner and the conversion was kicked by Charl van Vollenhoven.

This was too little too late for the side from Bellville and TUT had done enough to secure their first win of the season to the relief of the coach, players and supporters.

Flyhalf Morne Hugo had his best game of the season and scored a try and converted each attempt at goal. He made the right decisions and stayed calm under pressure, giving the rest of the side the confidence to maintain the pace right up until the end of the match.
