Maties look to Sollie, Germaine

Former FNB Maties coaches Sollie Goosen and Germaine Brinkhuis will take the reins of Stellenbosch's Young Guns team for the inaugural Varsity Cup Under-20 tournament.

Goosen (pictured) and Brinkhuis are ex-assistants of Chean Roux, having been part of the Maties' Varsity Cup-winning squads in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Chris Rossouw - the younger brother of Bulls backline coach Pieter - will now assist Roux at Varsity Cup level (as his backs coach), with former Western Province hooker Johan van Wyk coming on board as Roux's scrummaging consultant.

According to Goosen - a former WP, Border and Boland flyhalf - the appointments were made for continuity's sake and he is looking forward to teaming up with Brinkhuis in the all-new Young Guns competition.

"We have some talented players in our squad and Germaine and I have the job of getting them into the Maties rugby culture," Goosen told varsitycup.co.za.

"Most of the guys are in their second year of studies, so we know quite a bit about them, but it's still a major challenge for us coaches."

The all-new Varsity Young Guns competion - a two-pools, students-only tournament between the top eight Under-20 university sides in the country (groups will be split up according to a seedings system - will get underway on Monday, February 6.
