10 Reasons You Can’t Miss the 10th Varsity Cup Final

FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International News, Maties, Tuks No Comments on 10 Reasons You Can’t Miss the 10th Varsity Cup Final 3

Put on your party hats and fill your hands with confetti, this is not your routine final. While ordinarily competitions culminate in a trophy handover and perhaps a little champagne, there is nothing ordinary about the FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International.

If history is anything to go by, the rugby will be spectacular. Whether winning in the 89th minute or a comeback so immense that we’ll be speaking about it for years to come, the on-field action will be gripping.

But if all spectators were interested in was 80 minutes of rugby, stadiums would be empty and fans would pick the couch over a touchline seat. Varsity Cup is celebrating its 10th year of rocking rugby, a proper celebration is in order and it’s one you won’t want to miss.

Here are 10 reasons you cannot afford to miss the final at FNB Tuks on 17 April:

1) R20 000 up for grabs
Well technically it’s up for ‘kicks’. If you’ve ever been to a Varsity Cup match you would have seen this tricky, but rewarding half-time activation. The best-dressed fans are picked from the crowd to attempt to kick the rugby ball into a marked out area. All you have to do is get the ball to land in that area and R15 000 could be yours.

R5 000 will also be up for grabs during half time of the Steinhoff Koshuis Rugby Championship final – the curtain-raiser to the Varsity Cup final.

2) Get paid to dress up
It’s a birthday party – a 10th birthday party to be exact. How were you dressed at your own 10th birthday? Come dressed in your best party outfit, get spotted in the crowd and stand a chance to win R1 000. Get creative and join in on the fun – don’t be a party pooper!

3) Win Wacky Wednesday for a month
Dinner could be sorted. For a full month, Steers are offering the lucky winners of Steers Build-a-Burger juicy, saucy, flame-grilled Wacky Wednesday burgers for a month!

Come dressed up with a friend, as twins and you two will need to build a giant Steers burger as fast as possible to win!

4) Ice cold beer
What would a classic South African rugby final be without an ice cold SAB beer in your hand? Enjoy some of SA’s finest brew, served at the stadium and available at the various beer gardens. Whether students, clinking glasses to their winning university or a bunch of alumni toasting to old times, share a brew with your bru.

5) Beauties among the brutes
You may recognise former Miss World, Rolene Strauss… or current Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters? What you may not know is that both were Miss Varsity Cup contestants. On 17 April, during the Varsity Cup final, Miss Varsity Cup will be crowned. Be there to witness the potential next Miss South Africa representing her university and community.

6) Win a trip to the Cape Town Sevens
The party doesn’t have to end on 17 April. Steinhoff International know all about parties. If you’ve seen the Cape Town Sevens you know that. They are giving one lucky winner and three friends the chance to win an all-expenses paid trip to the Cape Town Sevens in December. If you haven’t entered yet, SMS Steinhoff, your name and email address to 47095.

7) The Dream Team
If you’ve indulged in fantasy football you know the joy of selecting an ultimate team of stars. Imagining the prospect of the best players in a league all combining to create a potent force. Well dreams become reality in the Varsity Cup and at the final a team comprising of the best players in the tournament will be announced. Their opponents? The Junior Springboks.

Be there to witness the announcement of a team so strong, that the Junior Boks could be sweating a little by the time the squad list is out.

8) Surprise!
At last year’s final, the Stellenbosch crowd put on an incredible display, as they sang their beloved “Daar’s Altyd Lente in die Boland” while thousands of supporters flashed cards of maroon and flowers in the crowd.

As can be expected in every final, this year will be no different. Going with the party theme, expect something special. While usually the birthday boy is surprised by his friends, at this party the birthday boy will be surprising his guests, as Varsity Cup celebrates a decade of rocking rugby!

9) Steinhoff Koshuis Championship final
Two of South Africa’s best rugby residences are back at it as Steinhoff Vishuis face Steinhoff Patria in the Steinhoff Koshuis Rugby Championship final. This is raw rugby at its best. These are youngsters bursting with talent with no regard for their bodies. Expect running rugby, crunching tackles and dazzling stepping in the perfect curtain-raiser to what should be a nail-biting final.

10) The rugby
It’s one of the classic clashes in South African rugby history. North versus South. Pretoria versus Cape Town. FNB Tuks versus FNB Maties. The Pretoria boys will want to exact revenge for 2017’s semi-final loss to the Maroon Machine. FNB Maties will want to overcome the only team to defeat them in 2017. The two sides have been head-and-shoulders above the rest of the pack in 2017.
South Africa is in for a treat. The invite is out, the stage set and candles lit. All you need to do is come to the party.
