FNB CPUT’s Malan Roode scored a hat-trick of tries as they thumped FNB UKZN 49-21 in the FNB Varsity Shield presented by Steinhoff International on Monday evening in Wellington.

For the first time in the history of the competition the game was played in the picturesque Boland town of Wellington, in front a packed DJ de Villiers Stadium.

The home side outscored their opponents by seven tries to three which included Malan’s hat-trick while hooker Sven Brundyn, Colin April, Butsha Mputa and late starting line-up inclusion in the second row, Elcado Baadjies, added to FNB CPUT’s try tally. FNB UKZN’s tries come courtesy of Taigh Schoor, Paki Mosiea and Mpumalanga Monareng.

FNB CPUT made their intentions loud (through their jovial supporters) and clear from the first kick-off, with hooker Brundyn and loose forward Glendon du Plessis linking brilliantly with the backline sending Malan over for the first of his three tries. Soon after the opening converted try Brundyn was rewarded with a five-pointer of his own. The hooker broke through two midfield tackles and fended off two FNB UKZN players to crash over.

Both kickers – Randy Brinkhuis for FNB CPUT and Schoor for the visiting side –  were in form off the tee, but it was the exciting line breaks from both sides that kept the packed stadium entertained for the entire 80 minutes.

A loose ball inside FNB CPUT’s half, saw lock Baadjies snap it up and burn the FNB UKZN defence to run in for a 30-metre dash as he dived over in the corner.

The first phase ball for the home side ensured that their threatening backline got quality ball as they ran hard at the FNB UKZN’s defence. April and Roode rounded off the tries for FNB CPUT, both five-pointers came from brilliant line breaks from the home side.

Despite the late surge which saw visiting team add two tries via Mosiea and Monareng it wasn’t enough. Replacement speedster Mputa dotted in the dying minutes of the game as the men from Wellington secured their second victory which sees them consolidate their top-three position on the Varsity Shield log.
