The FNB CUT Banas (Young Guns) are ready for their first tough assignment in the Varsity Cup Young Guns league of 2016, when they travel to neighbours FNB UFS for their opening match of the season at the Shimla Park stadium in Bloemfontein.

FNB UFS started their season with a loss to FNB Tuks last week, when the Pretoria side beat them by 14-8 in a tough encounter.

“Starting our season with a win would be fabulous, but we have to be realistic and expect nothing else but a tough and hard mountain to climb on Monday night,” manager Ferdie Venter emphasized.

“With only four league matches each to be played in the league, winning three or more of your matches is crucial.

“UFS will be with their backs to the wall after losing their first match, and we expect an extremely hard challenge from our Shimla Park rivals,” Venter said.

Coaches Deon van Wyk and Leon Grobbelaar are satisfied with the Banas’ preparation, motivation and commitment.

“We are more than ready for this encounter and all our players are fit and ready to give it all,” Van Wyk assured us.

“It will be like climbing Mount Everest, but our men are very eager and ready for this challenge.

“We will not be hung up to dry in the summer wind of Bloemfontein, and intend to make our season start with a solid and convincing performance,” said Van Wyk.

The FNB UFS team will certainly be favourites to take the honour in this one, but FNB CUT enjoy going into matches as underdogs.

“That is exactly how we prefer it.  As underdogs a good surprise is always sweeter and we do love sweet surprises,” Venter said, smiling.

The Bana coaches announced their captain for the first match and will be handing over their official new match kit to the team during the captain’s run.

Loose forward Jean Smal will lead the FNB Banas out for their first clash.
