FNB CUT Young Guns hooker gives it all

Just a year ago, he was playing hooker for his alma mater, Grey College, in Bloemfontein. This year LW Viljoen is a solid rock around whom the FNB CUT Young Guns (Banas) build their strong and mobile forward play in the FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International’s Young Guns league.

Viljoen was selected for the SA Bokkie Week team last year, as a reward for his fiery and highly motivational playing style as the hooker in the forward pack oven. As hooker, he flourishes with ball in hand in the loose and set pieces, whenever he gets the opportunity.

“I enjoy watching my two idols in action,” said Viljoen. “And I can only hope to be as valuable for my team as Adriaan Strauss and Bismarck du Plessis are for their respective teams.

“Although we lost our first match in the 2016 Young Guns’ League, I remain positive and hopeful of our chances in our remaining three league matches.

“As long as we keep working hard, maintain high levels of discipline and believe in each other as team members, we simply have to taste success this year,” Viljoen added.

Against the UFS Young Guns, there were positive signs in their loss against a very good side.

“I believe the FNB Junior Maties should be the team to watch this year, we face a massive test in Stellenbosch on the 14th of March, of that there can be little doubt.

“We all simply have to pitch up and give our all in this match, as another defeat would basically bring an end to our hopes of a major successful 2016 season,” Viljoen warns.

According to Viljoen, the team looks forward to the next match.

“We have only one injury after our first match. We should gel together much better in the next clash, and hopefully we can achieve our goal of winning sooner rather than later,” he said.
