The FNB CUT Banas (Young Guns) have had a good start to the 2016 FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International. They looked solid during their two warm-up matches against the Steinhoff CUT Rhinos (Koshuis team) and Bloemfontein Police, recently.
“After a winless 2015 Varsity Cup season, we are ready to emulate the Ixias, who scored their first Varsity Cup win against Ikeys on Monday evening,” said Bana manager, Ferdie Venter.
“Our pre-season preparations allowed us to access our strengths and weaknesses fully.
“We are more than ready for the challenges ahead in 2016 and look forward to our first Young Guns fixture against Shimlas Young Guns on 22 February,” Venter added.
As was the case with the senior FNB Ixias team, Banas could not record a victory in 2015. The FNB Ixias win over FNB UCT may just have increased their belief in themselves for the season ahead.
“We have so much talent in our side this year, and now we also have the added motivation of the first Varsity Cup win (for FNB CUT) in this year’s competition,” Venter explained.
Prop Fanie Vermaak, scrumhalf Frans Hugo, flyhalf Muller Joubert, fullback Benna Niewoudt and flankers Jean Smal and Dian Dry, look to be pivotal players at this early stage of the season.
FNB CUT teams enjoy giving the ball air, spreading it out wide to their exciting backlines and taking on the opposition up front. Even with only 40% possession, this Banas side could be the surprise package of the 2016 Young Guns competition.
“So far we have been relatively injury-free and we have a very talented group of young players,” Venter added. “We enjoy the challenge of developing them into promising future Ixias and have total confidence in their talent and abilities.”
The Banas will play four Young Guns matches during the first stage of the Young Guns league, starting against the FNB Shimlas Young Guns at Shimla Park on 22 February.
