The FNB CUT Banas (Young Guns) will have their work cut out for them this Easter weekend, as they face their remaining three opponents within a matter of just five days in Johannesburg.
Four of the eight Young Gun teams will be in the same boat in terms of the number of remaining fixtures, while two teams only play one remaining match each.
For the Banas, they start their intense weekend off with the match against the FNB NMMU Young Guns on Thursday, 15:00 at Rand Stadium in the City of Gold. The PE-side currently lies third on the log, having beaten the FNB Pukke Young Guns by 20-8 in February.
The Bloem Boys lost their only match thus far against the log leaders, FNB Kovsie Young Guns.
Although the Banas have an excellently balanced side, their opponents will be an unknown force to them. For this reason, the FNB CUT side should focus on the own strengths from the kickoff – dominating with their mobile and strong forwards, while using every opportunity to score out wide with their willing and able backs.
“No match in this competition is easy, but we have to face up to any opponent and force our own game plan onto each opponent,” Bana coach Deon van Wyk suggests.
“Our team have seriously talented players, and creating opportunities and converting them into points, is up to each one of our 23 players,” he said.
Injuries may be crucial when playing three matches over five days, and players will have to be innovative when it comes to match plans during the latter matches of this weekend.
Players need to adapt to each situation and rely on their own abilities and talent.
“We believe they are prepared well for the tough five days ahead, but each player needs to step up and make each opportunity count.
“We want to move away from the log bottom, and therefore we need to win our matches, however hard this weekend turns out to be,” manager Ferdie Venter believes.
Besides their match on Thursday, the last two fixtures over this weekend will be against FNB Ikeys Young Guns on Saturday and FNB Maties Young Guns on Easter Monday.
