Outside centre for the FNB Maties team, Kyle Steyn, will be playing his rugby in Kimberley next season with the Griquas. Steyn who has been a formidable member of the FNB Maties’ success in this year’s Varsity Cup will join the Griquas after the competition on a six-month contract with the option to extend for another year, depending on performance.
Steyn, who recently completed his post-graduate PGCE and was enrolled for PGDip in transport and logistics this year, praised Varsity Cup for the role it played in putting him in this position.
“Varsity Cup played a massive role in terms of creating a platform for exposure, but it also created an opportunity to play rugby on a higher level than club rugby and adapting to that new level played a big role in my development.”
Steyn has played six Varsity Cup matches so far this season, while he represented the Maties sevens team in the 2015 and 2016 Varsity Sevens competitions. Steyn will play from the bench in Monday’s clash against FNB CUT in Bloemfontein in what would be the side’s second successive match in the city of roses. This is also the place where Steyn was spotted by the Griquas following FNB Maties’ hammering of FNB Shimlas two weeks ago.
