FNB Maties too strong for FNB UCT

FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International News, Ikeys, Maties No Comments on FNB Maties too strong for FNB UCT 219

The FNB Ikey Tigers went down 47-16 to a high flying FNB Maties side on Monday afternoon at the Green Mile. A brace of tries by Duncan Saal and a clinical attacking performance saw the visitors run passed their intervarsity rivals.

The FNB Ikey Tigers got on the scoreboard first through the boot of Lohan Lubbe, but their lead was short lived as Craig Barry produced a moment of magic to finish off an FNB Maties move worth seven points. Lubbe was forced off after the strat break as he suffered an arm injury, and while Rico Lategan was in the sin bin, the FNB Ikey Tigers conceded a try and conversion from Christoper Smith.

Rob Anderson got the home team back on the scoreboard through a drop goal and then a penalty, before Duncan Saal scored his first try of the night, ending the first half FNB Maties 23-9 FNB UCT.

The first ten minutes of the second half were back and forth, with no team really able to capitalize on their opportunities. In the 53rd minute, Nyasha Tarusenga scored the FNB Ikey Tigers’ first and only try of the night as he crashed over the line before Anderson converted. The joy was short lived, as a defensive mistake saw Haznar extend FNB Maties’ lead once again with a five-point try.

FNB Maties showed no signs of slowing down, scoring three tries in the last nine minutes of the game. Duncan Saal completed the scoring in the last five minutes of the game. On the day, FNB Maties were clinical in attack and resolute in defence, putting up brick walls wherever the FNB Ikey Tigers tried to run through. The match ended 47-16 to FNB Maties.
