After a significant loss on Monday to current Varsity Shield leaders, the University of the Western Cape (FNB UWC), the FNB Rhodes team is looking to make a comeback with their first win in the competition against the University of Fort Hare (FNB UFH) next week.
Captain Jono Braans will be making his return to the field after recovering from injury, and is looking forward to putting FNB Rhodes back in the tournament. “They [FNB UFH] have a very strong team this year but we know we can beat anyone on our day. With a big Rhodes crowd behind us we’re hoping we can cause an upset,” Braans commented.
Coach Qondakele Sompondo is eager to get his team going, acknowledging that “this is going to be a very tough contest between two teams that are desperate to register points,” with Rhodes having lost all of their games so far. “We came close [to a win] twice and got blown away by UWC on Monday, so this game is critical if we are to go anywhere in this competition,” Sompondo said.
Kick-off is at 18:30 on the 27th of February on the Rhodes University Great Field.
