FNB Shimlas turned around their loss on a wet field against FNB UCT last week, by beating FNB CUT Ixias 22-13 on another wet pitch at CUT Stadium on Tuesday afternoon after trailing 9-13 at half time.

The match was played on Tuesday afternoon, after the field was considered too wet for play on Monday evening, resulting in the match being postponed by a day.

The heavy underfoot conditions, continuous drizzle and slight southerly breeze did not allow for the exciting, running varsity rugby we have become accustomed to.

During the first half, CUT managed to scrum extremely well and their tactical kicking proved to be effective, allowing them to score the only try of the first half. Their biggest problem turned out to be conceding more than 10 penalties in the match. The FNB Shimlas wing, Marco Mason, scored five penalties in the match, effectively punishing the home side for their indiscretions.

Mason also added one conversion, bringing his total contribution to 17 points, earning him the title of “FNB Player that Rocks” in this muddy encounter.

Somehow, the FNB CUT Ixias lost the plot in the second half. Their game plan to run out of trouble from their own 22 in the second half resulted in numerous turnovers after handling errors. This enabled the FNB Shimlas to pin them down inside their own half, and score a vital try through fullback Setchaba Motswele

Flyhalf Martin Jacobs kept the home side in the game with his capable kicking boot, scoring two penalties and one conversion. FNB CUT’s try was scored by scrumhalf, Ruben Heymans, shortly after the first half strategy break, which put the FNB CUT Ixias in the lead until the break.

This win places the FNB Shimlas back in the footrace for the Varsity Cup title, while it is back to the drawing board for the winless FNB CUT Ixias one week before their clash with FNB UJ, who earned a dramatic win against FNB Tuks last night.
