FNB Shimlas qualified for the FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International semi-finals, against FNB Tuks, which will be played on Monday 3 April 2017 in Pretoria.
FNB Shimlas had a bye in the last round, offering them the opportunity regroup and sort out injuries to key players. Ironically, FNB Shimlas have their semi-final opponents, FNB Tuks to thank for making it through to the 2017 Varsity Cup semi-finals. FNB Tuks defeated FNB Pukke in Potchefstroom on Monday in the final round of the Varsity Cup.
The FNB Shimlas didn’t have it easy in the 2017 edition of the competition, but had a great start and managed to hang around second spot on the Varsity Cup log until they lost against FNB Maties and FNB Tuks. FNB Shimlas also had to play two games at the Free State Stadium, off campus. Injuries, particularly to the two flyhalves, were their biggest enemy during the competition.
After the FNB Shimlas had a dream year in 2015, being crowned the Varsity Cup champions, winning all their matches, they failed to reach the final four in the 2016 season. It was a huge disappointment for the management team and fans.
But now all is forgotten, and although FNB Shimlas will be the underdogs, they are playing with a fully fit team and will give it their all on Monday, hoping to play in the finals of the Varsity Cup. Who knows, there is a possibility that FNB Shimlas may yet bounce back and be crowned the Varsity Cup champions in 2017.
