FNB Tuks made light work of FNB Shimlas, winning 65-19 in the seventh round of the FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International in Bloemfontein at the Free State Stadium, home of the Cheetahs.
The FNB Tuks backline started brilliantly, finding gaps in the FNB Shimlas defence and winger Sibahle Maxwane dotted down with a seven-point try, converted by Tinus De Beer opening the scoreboard on 9-0 for FNB Tuks three minutes into the game. Dewald Naude stretched the score 0-14 with a five-point try in the 18th minute. FNB Tuks were not done yet and after a brilliant kick from Sibathle Maxwane he collected the ball and went over for a seven-pointer, his second try, taking the game away from the FNB Shimlas 0-23 just 21 minutes into the first half.
FNB Tuks were all over FNB Shimlas and ran the ball from their 22-metre line and with excellent support play FNB Tuks prop Andrew Beerwinkel went over for a seven-point try stretching the score to 0-30, 26 minutes in. FNB Shimlas’ defence totally crumbled and FNB Tuks ran from the kick-off where winger Dewald Naude scored his second, stretching the score to 0-37. The half time score was 0-37 to FNB Tukkies.
FNB Tuks dominated the first half scoring five tries, playing attacking rugby. FNB Tuks kept their momentum, forcing phase after phase sending FNB Tuks captain, Chris Massyn, over for a seven-point try, which was converted by Tinus De Beer, taking the score to 0-46.
FNB Shimlas eventually opening their score 49 minutes into the game when winger Vuyani Maqina rounded the opposition backline and the five-pointer was converted by Marco Mason. FNB Tuks answered with persistent pressure and soon FNB Tuks no.8 crossed the line for a five-pointer converted by Tinus De Beer, taking the score to 7-53.
Once again FNB Shimlas showed character, fighting their way into the 22-metre area of the FNB Shimlas and centre Lihleli Xoli nabbed a five-pointer, taking the score to 19-60 with seven minutes of play left in the game. FNB Tuks had the last say in the game when Jan Henning Campher scored a try, taking the full time score to 19-65.
