It was end-to-end stuff as FNB UFS Young Guns tipped FNB UJ Young Guns in a match that had 14 tries on offer at Rand Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

In the final match of the day at Rand Stadium, FNB UJ Young Guns were playing their first match of the Young Guns season against FNB UFS in a sunny Johannesburg.

It was the men in orange who were on the scoreboard first, as hooker Le Roux Barnard shoved his way over for five points in the opening minutes of the match. Another try a few minutes later by fullback Morne van der Berg gave FNB UJ Young Guns the early ascendancy, leading 13-0.

FNB UFS Young Guns were slow to start, but began showing promise after the strategy break. They soon scored through scrumhalf Dian Badenhorst and were back in it at 13-8.

The defecit was only five for a few minutes before No 8 Morney Moos crashed over after Curtis Jonas broke the line and set up the big man for FNB UJ Young Guns’ third.

James Venter was yellow-carded for not releasing in the 26th minute, but FNB UFS Young Guns never made their one-man advantage count.
But even with a full FNB UJ Young Guns team back on the field, FNB UFS Young Guns finally found some momentum. Another converted try by Badenhorst had them back in the match, 21-16 down.

In an end-to-end final few minutes a try was scored either side, as the teams went into half time with FNB UJ Young Guns leading 26-21.

FNB UJ Young Guns came out raring and a fantastic solo effort try by substitute Johannes van Tonder set the tone in the second half. I what felt like a sevens rugby match, there were tries scored at either end, with the scores at 53-50 to FNB UFS Young Guns with 10 minutes to play.

A yellow card to FNB UFS substitute Phumzile Maqondwana for deliberately slapping down the ball left his team with just 14 men for the remainder of the match. But they did enough, as the team kicked it out and celebrated winning a match that had 103 points in it.
FNB UFS Young Guns earned a 53-50 victory over FNB UJ Young Guns.
