It was a tough contest as both sides went into the match with the will to win. FNB UCT’s Matthew Andrews was the first to register on the scoreboard after punishing the defence to score a converted try in the seventh minute of the game. It was only three minutes and FNB UJ replied with a try of their own through Martin Mangwiro changing the score to 8-5 for FNB UCT after 10 minutes.

After the strategy break, James Venter made it 10 for FNB UJ after scoring a well constructed try in the 23rd minute. After working hard with the ball in hand, FNB UCT were rewarded with a try through Gerard Pieterse which was also converted by Anthony Dakin who was having a good kicking game. It was 16-10 for FNB UCT after 28 minutes. In the 39th minute FNB UJ’s Johann Vermaak put on a good run to score a try which was converted by Curtis Jonas to put FNB UJ in the lead. The scores read 18-16 for FNB UJ at half-time.

At the start of the second half, Johann Vermaak continued to seek points for his side as he scored his second try in the 42nd minute to put FNB UJ 23-16 up. FNB UCT replied after 48 minutes, when Michael Henning picked up a loose ball to dive over the try line. Anthony Dakin was accurate once again as he kicked over to make the scores 24-23 for FNB UCT after 48 minutes. FNB UCT were back in the game and Ahmed Mohammed had a try to show for it in the 56th minute, extending their lead to 29-23. In the 59th minute, Tristan Eve scored in the corner to narrow FNB UCT’s lead to 29-28.

After the second strategy break, FNB UJ’s Willem Du Plessis put FNB UJ in the lead once again after a hard-fought try to make the scores 33-29. Two minutes later, Johannes Van Tonder ran through the defence to extend the lead to 38-29 for FNB UJ. FNB UCT scored a try through Liam Greenhalgh in the 76th minute to make the score 37-38 for FNB UJ. Andile Koyana put two points more on the board and the full-time score was 40-37 for FNB UJ.
