FNB UJ Young Guns made it back-to-back wins for the first time this season as they managed to dispatch rivals FNB Wits Young Guns in Johannesburg.

The match under beautiful conditions in Johannesburg started off in explosive fashion, and this was evident when FNB UJ Young Guns made use of the early pressure by scoring an early try. The try came courtesy of Jan-Louis La Grange and the coversion was scored by PW Steenkamp, as the FNB UJ Young Guns set the tone early on.

A yellow card to Tiaan Venter of FNB UJ Young Guns gave the away side a chance to get back, and they did with a penalty from Tiane Chabant to make it 8-2. FNB Wits Young Guns halved the deficit with another penalty to make it 8-4.

The turnaround was eventually complete as the away side took the lead after lovely interchange of passes which saw full back Themba Mandlati fly through to score a try, the conversion was made and the score was 8-12.

FNB UJ Young guns were having none of it as they powered through via centre Cyprian Nkomo to score a try and left the match perfectly balanced at 13-12 going into halftime. An early penalty by FNB UJ Young Guns in the second half saw them gain the momentum, and there was further daylight between the teams as prop Lehlohonolo Mphuthi scored a powerful try to put the home side further ahead 23-12.

FNB UJ Young Guns lock Tiaan Venter was having a bad day at the office as he was shown a second yellow, and was sent off. FNB UJ Young Guns had their backs against the wall. Discipline seemed to be a problem for the home side as again they were shown a yellow card and were down to 13 men.

They were duly punished as the away side clawed back with a try from Sandiso Manakaza, with the conversion scored and the match was in the reach of the away side 23-20. The enthralling encounter took another twist as the home side creeped through to score a try with 13 men thanks to superb hands which saw flanker Siyabonga Luwaca touch down for a try, the match was 28-20 with 20 minutes left.

The game was seemingly put to bed when FNB UJ Young Guns extended their lead to 33-20 when captain Edwin Jansen got another one for his side. A stupendous no-look pass from hooker HP van Schoor assisted prop Lehlohonolo Mphuthi for his second try, and the conversion was scored to put the score 41-20 to the home side.

FNB Wits Young Guns added some respect to the score line as Themba Mandlati scored his second try with the conversion scored as the scoreboard read 41-28. That was the end as FNB UJ Young Guns ran away with the game as victors.
