FNB UJ held nothing back against FNB Maties at Rand Stadium in Johannesburg on Monday evening, hammering them 69-32.
It took the FNB Maties just nine minutes to take the lead and go 8-0 up, but just 3 minutes later FNB UJ managed a quick response and the score was 8-8 after 13 minutes of play. FNB UJ started putting together some fine moves and had the smarts to finish them off as they were level again at 16-16 by the 20 minute mark.
FNB Maties were caught off guard by the pace and strength of flyhalf Eduard Fouche as he tore through their defence, bagged a try and made the conversion to put the Johannesburg side up by 24-16. The teams found themselves level yet again as FNB Maties equalized and made it 24-24.
This did not deter FNB UJ from pushing onwards and they were soon rewarded as they took the lead by going 40-32 up in time for the second strategy break. Later in the match FNB Maties went on the attack but lost the ball after a lot of hard work and FNB UJ took full advantage of the counter attack as right wing Odwa Nkunjana used his pace to put his team 53-32 up.
FNB UJ quickly increased their lead and made it a convincing 61-32 and at this point they looked untouchable. The brilliant pace of Odwa Nkunjana proved too much for FNB Maties as he returned to score another try.
The match came to a conclusion at 67-32 with FNB UJ walking away with a morale-boosting win.
