FNB UWC and star flyhalf Aidynn Cupido were ruthless as they defeated log leaders FNB UKZN 44-16 at Rand Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon.

Undefeated FNB UKZN were up against a fired-up FNB UWC at Rand Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon. Conditions were hot with a slight breeze in a must-win match for FNB UWC.

FNB UWC were off to the perfect start when Matthew Faught barged over for a try in the opening minutes after some fine forward play. Soon after that, Aidynn Cupido took advantage of a penalty, slotting one over from nearly 40 metres out to extend his side’s lead to 10-0.

Despite the score line, the match was in the balance, with both sides retaining possession well. Strong play by FNB UWC’s forward pack set up Cupido for a try in the corner in the 30th minute. He converted it himself to put FNB UWC up 18-0. FNB UKZN spent the remainder of the half attacking in FNB UWC’s 22, but FNB UWC’s defence was impenetrable.

Aidynn Cupido was on fire again in the second half and it didn’t take him long to add two points to FNB UWC’s tally with a mammoth long range drop goal.

FNB UKZN had most of the possession in the second half, but lacked any direction. FNB UWC held strong on defence. But FNB UKZN eventually found the break through substitute Tristan Blewett, who split the FNB UWC defence after a fine piece of set play.

But FNB UWC never gave up and with 13 mins to play, Brandon Valentyn forced his way over for FNB UWC’s third try of the match. Clinical Cupido converted and FNB UWC were 28-8 up.
The task was too much for FNB UKZN after that and although they pulled one back, FNB UWC scored another two tries in the final few minutes of the match.

FNB UWC have made a late charge for the top spot in the Varsity Shield and lay down a marker at the Rand Stadium, defeating FNB UKZN 44-16.
