FNB Varsity Shield presented by Steinhoff International caught up with FNB UKZN Impi coach, Michael Horak, a few days after their impressive 63-10 win against FNB TUT on 18 February at TUT Stadium.

It was a win that extended their tally to 18 points. Michael Horak spoke with Varsity Shield about their start to the season and how they were looking to continue their impressive run of form.

Varsity Shield: UKZN Imps have had a faultless start to their campaign what can you attribute to the team’s great start?

Michael Horak: Yes we have been blessed with good results in the first round of the competition. This is predominantly down to the hard work that the team has put in during the pre season. Secondly, the team thrives on respect, intensity and a very high work rate. This has been evident in every game, even when we have sometimes found ourselves in difficult situations.

Varsity Shield:  What can the team still improve on?

Michael Horak: There is a lot we can improve on. First and foremost, our accuracy and execution. We are in search of perfection and know we can get there as a group. The great thing about this group is that we are not happy with good or even great.

Varsity Shield: Is there a player you dread not having in your team on match day?

Michael Horak: No, every single guy in our group in special and brings a unique set of values. Our way of thinking is that the team is more important than any individual, so we have faith in every single UKZN player whom comes in to represent the group.

Varsity Shield: How  are you going to utilise this week’s bye?

Michael Horak: It is an opportunity to work harder and iron out any technical issues that we have identified that needs improving.

Varsity Shield: What are you hoping to achieve come the end of the season?

Michael Horak: We do not measure success and failure by what stands on the scoreboard or in logs, our mission is to improve every week and make memories along the way. The Lord has blessed these guys with so much talent that success to us as a group would be to try and maximize these talents and showcase them every day and to the public in matches.

Varsity Shield: Thanks for taking time out to talk to us, Michael. Good luck for your upcoming match against FNB Wits and we hope to speak to you soon.

Michael Horak: Thank you, it has been a pleasure.
