It’s been 10 years of Rugby That Rocks. Ten years of forging a legacy, etching names into South African rugby history and 10 years of establishing traditions. As Varsity Cup moves into its second decade it added another special custom to Varsity Cup finals – a captain’s lunch.
All former Varsity Cup captains, who lifted the title for their university, were invited to a lunch in the city of the Varsity Cup final (Pretoria) on 17 April, and will be invited again for years to come.
Each year, the former captains will all dine with Varsity Cup CEO Duitser Bosman, founder François Pienaar and the most recent winning captain creates the menu.
In the first of these traditions, 2016 winning captain Jeandre Rudolph selected the menu. With former captains Benjamin Booysen, Zane Botha, AJ Coertzen and
Springbok Lourens Adriaanse in attendance, Jeandre Rudolph’s menu had a real student twist to it.
The four captains in absence, who were overseas, were Wesley Wilkins, Jono Ross, Nick Fenton-Wells and Liam Slatem.
It will be interesting to see what FNB Tuks captain Chris Massyn goes for in 2018.
Jeandre Rudolph’s 2017 Captain’s Lunch menu:
Focaccia-style bread, topped with cheddar and grated biltong.
Served with a shot of Jägermeister.
300g fillet steak with mushroom and feta toppings and sauce of choice.
Served with Tequila.
