It was cracking start to the new season by both University of Fort Hare and Walter Sisulu, as FNB WSU defeat FNB UFH in their Varsity Shield debut, 33-12 on Thursday night.

The men from Alice drew first blood, through the golden boot of Jandre Christian who converted two penalties, but FNB WSU soon replied with a golden boot of their own, by Zizipho Kayi who also converted two penalties of his own. It was, however, FNB WSU that claimed the first try with a magical 50-metre run down the touchline by Ntando Mfengu.

The men from Alice grabbed a hard-earned try of their own, which came after multiple phases and was eventually converted by Luyolo Batshise. The first half ended honours even at 12-12 and everything to play for.

Just 10 minutes into the second half, FNB WSU yet again claimed an early try by Lubabalo Lento in the corner and the accurate Zizipho Kayi slotted over the conversion. Only five minutes later, the inside centre from FNB WSU scored a brilliant try. Luzuko Mafu dotted down and FNB WSU extended their lead.

With time ticking away, FNB UFH were looking hard for answers, but only FNB WSU had the answers as Khanyiso Roloma piled misery on the hosts with another try.

The game ended with FNB WSU claiming a well-deserved 33-12 victory over FNB UFH.
