Steinhoff Mopanie have gotten in some quality R&R during the mid-year break and are looking to consolidate their position on top of the UP-Tuks Steinhoff Koshuis log.
Steinhoff Mopanie, who represented FNB UP-Tuks in the flagship Steinhoff Koshuis Championships earlier this year, are sitting firmly at the head of the table with four wins and 19 log points. With just two rounds left until the knockouts, Mopanie heach coach Barend Kirsten, believes that their destiny is in their own hands.
“To say it simply, this is always the most difficult part of university koshuis rugby. Examinations,” Kirsten told varsitycup.co.za.
“We trained as much as we could before the exams started after which I gave the boys off. But again, all the residences across South Africa have had to contend with this issue.
“We have to buckle down and work hard once the season gets underway. We have a lot of areas to focus on including our scrumming as Boekenhout showed us up in our league game. We need to control our own fate, simple,” Kirsten added.
Steinhoff Mopanie captain, Hein Schoeman, believes that the mid-term break is exactly what the team needed as they’ve been training and playing since early January. The no.8 also issued a warning to Steinhoff Mopanie about becoming complacent.
“This break couldn’t have come at a better time. The guys are tired and needed the break to re-energize. But we are all keen to get back on the rugby field. And to continue our winning ways,” Schoeman said.
“Having said that, being unbeaten means nothing. There are no favourites in this league. We must stay grounded and approach each game with the same attitude,” he added.
The UP-Tuks Koshuis League first teams are back in action on Tuesday, 26 July.
