Round Eight: Thrilling Gauteng derby awaits

FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International News No Comments on Round Eight: Thrilling Gauteng derby awaits 0

The Johannesburg derby between FNB UJ and FNB Wits at the UJ Stadium promises to be a massive encounter as FNB Wits look to bag their third successive win while FNB UP-Tuks, FNB Maties and FNB Shimlas all play teams outside of the top four. FNB UP-Tuks host a wounded FNB Ikeys in Pretoria while three-time champs FNB Maties travel to Bloemfontein to face winless FNB CUT. In their last game of the season, 2015 winners FNB Shimlas host basement dwelling FNB Madibaz.

FNB UJ v FNB Wits
After losing their opening two rounds FNB UJ are on a four-match winning streak and find themselves sitting comfortably in the top four while FNB Wits are on a high after winning their second consecutive game, which included a shock victory over defending champions, FNB NWU-Pukke. Coach Hugo van As and nearly his entire FNB Wits staff are all former FNB UJ men and will certainly want to prove a point in this one.

However, FNB Maties have not lost a game since their opening round defeat against the old foe, FNB UP-Tuks and will want to continue in this fine form given that a win in Bloemfontein will almost certainly guarantee the men from Stellenbosch a home semi-final.
