The University of Pretoria’s Steinhoff Sonop have announced their intentions of winning the Steinhoff Koshuis Championship at their launch in Brooklyn, Pretoria last night.

The launch was attended by the majority of Steinhoff Sonop’s residents who turned out to witness the handing out of jerseys ahead of Steinhoff Sonop’s first match of the season against Steinhoff Helderberg.

Steinhoff Sonop’s participation in the Steinhoff Koshuis Championship is the fruition of the hard work that the koshuis has put into their rugby programme according to head coach, Dinos Kaparos, who not only represented Steinhoff Sonop during his studies but played international rugby for Greece as well.

“It is a huge honour for us to be a part of this competition as we worked hard to get here so it is good to see that our systems are paying off. Having said that we are not just here to participate, we are here to win,” said Kaparos.

Steinhoff Sonop will host Steinhoff Helderberg (Stellenbosch University) and the reigning champions Steinhoff Vishuis (University of the Free State) at the Tuks Rugby Stadium while they will travel to Potchefstroom and Bloemfontein where they will face Steinhoff Patria (University of the North West) and Steinhoff Rhinos (Central University of Technology) respectively.

A challenge that Steinhoff Sonop captain and no.8, Bert Rossouw, and his charges are relishing.

“The boys are really excited to be involved in this competition. It is our first time so we want to make our mark,” said Rossouw.

There were several prominent FNB UP-Tuks alumni in attendance including former Springbok captain Wynand Claassen who issued Steinhoff Sonop the following message of good luck ahead of their opening match.

“This is a great honour for Sonop as they celebrate 101 years of existence and the first time representing the University of Pretoria in the Steinhoff Koshuis Championship. We at Tuks Rugby wish them all the best ahead of a very tough competition,” said Claassen.

Steinhoff Sonop kick off their Steinhoff Rugby Championship campaign against Steinhoff Helderberg next Monday, 27 February at the Tuks Rugby Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 16:15.
