The FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International engaged with FNB Shimlas legends past to find out more about the inspiring Shimlas song.
“Every fellow every fellow in the blue and white and yellow, plays a part for the old varsity. It’s the knowledge it’s the knowledge that we’re playing for our college. It’s the Shimlas of our own varsity. On defence on attack pushing forward falling back our hearts will never never slack. So every fellow every fellow in the blue and white and yellow plays a part for the old varsity. Shimlas yes! Shimlas yes!
You will hear this song from the cloakrooms before matches and after battles. FNB Shimlas will sing the Shimlas song with pride and honour and you can’t help but sing along. ‘Oom Ewie Cronje’ who left deep tracks at the University of the Free State and the even the local sporting community in the Free State, sung the song as if he was still playing for the FNB Shimlas.
“The song most probably originated in the 1940s and has been sung since then to inspire the Shimlas players,” said Oom Ewie.
The Shimlas song has been sung by countless Shimlas heroes since the 1940s. Legends such as Tat Botha, Choet Visser, Ewie Cronje and Os Du Randt just to mention a few. All former and current Shimlas players will always honour the inspirational Shimlas song.
After the heavy defeat to FNB Maties, the Shimlas song will undoubtedly inspire FNB Shimlas to winning ways again.
Shimlas yes! Shimlas yes!
