Steinhoff Cobras came back from an early setback to pull off a commanding win against Steinhoff Harlequins. The team from UCT have now gone unbeaten for two consecutive campaigns, making the taste of victory even sweeter.

The hosts didn’t get off to a good start in the game, with a misplaced pass deep in their own half saw Steinhoff Harlequins’ Martin Skeller cross the line, giving them an 8-0 lead after Greg Lutge converted. Steinhoff Cobras got their own back soon afterwards, as Wilensky scored to reduce the deficit to only three points. This was followed by a period of sustained pressure from Steinhoff Harlequins, who has Steinhoff Cobras camped in their own half for a significant amount of time. They came close to extending their lead via some skilful running from Dillan Malgas, but Steinhoff Cobras remained resolute in defence.

When they finally got out of their own half, Chris Heunis put Steinhoff Cobras ahead after breaking through two tackles. Steinhoff Cobras then began growing into the game, and after Joshua Attenborough’s try was converted, they went into the halftime break with an 18-8 lead.

Steinhoff Cobras started the second half in the same way the ended the first, with Morkel stretching their lead to 23-8. The game went back and forth for a while, with no team posing any real threat of scoring. Steinhoff Harlequins had the opportunity to fight their way back into the game when Steinhoff Cobras lost Landman and Neill to the sin bin.

However, it was Steinhoff Cobras who scored next after being restored to 15 men, with Byrone Kennedy scoring his first try of the day. Steinhoff Harlequins finally managed to break through Steinhoff Cobras’ defence a few minutes from time, with Fildrey Swarts sliding home. In the final moments of the game, Jayson Landman slid home, and Lee converted to end the game 39-13 to Steinhoff Cobras.
