After a flurry of six tries in the second half, the Steinhoff Maties Young Guns defeated the FNB UCT Young Guns 40-24 in an 11-try thriller at the Green Mile.
The FNB UCT Young Guns started the game well, coping with the intensity that their opponents brought this time around. Jamie King made the breakthrough for the home side, with Rory Thomson’s conversion giving the home team an 8-0 lead early on in the match. The FNB UCT Young Guns continued to dominate the first quarter of the game, with Edward Bester crossing the line to give his side a 16-point lead.
The Steinhoff Maties Young Guns came back strong after the first strat break, working the ball well and allowing Johan Visser to break through and cross the line. Duvenhage then converted, halving the deficit. One would have thought that the Steinhoff Maties Young Guns were clawing their way back into the game until Jamie King crossed the line for his second try of the day, restoring the home team’s 16-point lead. The dynamic of the game shifted in the second half, with FNB Maties Young Guns turning up the heat on their opponents. Duvenhage was the first to cross the white line, with Hartzenberg showing signs of what a dangerous runner he can be. A strong arm from Thomas Meyer saw him fending off defenders as he extended Steinhoff Maties Young Guns’ lead.
The boys from Stellenbosch also displayed some attacking flair along with their efficiency, with Ryan Muller expertly collecting a chipped ball from John Lourens before crossing the try line. Another strong run from Hartzenberg saw Troy Payne scoring another for the visitors.
