Steinhoff Rhinos too strong for Spears

The inaugural rugby match between CUT’s Steinhoff Rhinos and The Spears from the National University of Lesotho (NUL), turned out to be somewhat one-sided as the Steinhoff Rhinos comfortably won 65-0 in Bloemfontein over the weekend. The Steinhoff Rhinos led 32-0 at the break.

But hats off to the Spears. The visitors never gave up and continuously tried running the ball with the scraps of possession they had. Both sides defended with all they had, but the superior handling skills and dominance weighed too much in favour of the home side.

The Steinhoff Rhinos scored eleven tries to none in the match, which was affected by the gusty north-westerly wind at the CUT Rugby Stadium on Saturday.

Neil le Roux (centre) and loose forwards Vincent Pike and Xolani Jacobs caught the eye and proved they were more than ready for the Steinhoff Rhino’s 2017 season in the FNB Varsity Cup, presented by Steinhoff International.

In the curtain-raiser, the CUT Development XV scored a comfortable victory of 44-5 against the NUL ‘B’ XV, after leading 27-0 at the change.

The CUT Ladies won their sevens rugby match against the NUL Ladies by 28-0 after leading 14-0 at the break.
