Underdogs Steinhoff Sonop did the unthinkable when they dethroned Steinhoff Mopanie in the UP-Tuks Koshuis final after beating the champions 9-3 in what can only be described as a brutal encounter on Tuesday, 30 August at the Tuks Stadium.
Steinhoff Mopanie went into the final as favourites but it was Steinhoff Sonop who took their scoring opportunities and nailed three first half penalties to one to give them a 9-3 lead at the break.
The second half saw both teams throw everything at each other in attack but their defensive structures stood firm which saw Steinhoff Sonop crowned as the 2016 UP-Tuks Koshuis champions. Steinhoff Sonop assistant coach, Conrad Boshoff, believes that his charges showed immense character to win the final.
“I think we should great composure to win the match. We took our chances to secure points in what proved to be a very tightly contested final,” he told varsitysportssa.com.
Steinhoff Mopanie captain, Hein Schoeman, stated that missed opportunities proved to be the difference between the teams and credited Sonop on winning the final.
“I believe that both teams were evenly matched throughout the match but Sonop made their chances count. A few silly mistakes and poor decision making when we had the ball ensured that we could not get a foothold in the match,” said Schoeman.
