It may not have been a dream season for Steinhoff Sonop in their first appearance in the Steinhoff Koshuis Championship but the lessons learnt from playing against some of the best university koshuis teams across South Africa are without a doubt invaluable.
Steinhoff Sonop quickly realised that competing in this competition is by no means an easy feat as the men from Pretoria suffered losses to Steinhoff Helderberg (FNB Maties) and Steinhoff Patria (FNB NWU-Pukke) with the latter being a convincing 47-21 drubbing at the hands of the North West University koshuis.
It was not all doom and gloom for Steinhoff Sonop as they bagged two wins during their campaign. An emphatic 50-23 thrashing of Steinhoff Rhinos (FNB CUT) helped set them up for their come from behind 23-21 win against the reigning champions, Steinhoff Vishuis (FNB Shimlas), in Pretoria.
The players thoroughly enjoyed being involved in a competition of this magnitude with Steinhoff Sonop head coach, Dinos Kaparos, stating that their involvement has only spurred the boys on to return next year despite the competition being a baptism of fire for Steinhoff Sonop.
“The level of skill shown by koshuis rugby players was incredible. We knew this would be a tough competition but we did not expect this level of skill on display every Monday,” said Kaparos.
“Having said that, I’m a happy coach. The boys really put up their hands and fought tooth and nail to be competitive in every game. Beating the defending champions is definitely a highlight for us and the boys are even more determined to return next year,” he added.
Steinhoff Vishuis will face Steinhoff Patria in the Steinhoff Koshuis Championship final on Monday, 17 April 2017. Kick-off is scheduled for 16:45 with the venue to be decided after the FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International semifinals.
