The FNB UP-Tuks Young Guns got their season going with a tough 14-8 win over FNB Kovsies Young Guns in sweltering Pretoria conditions in what was a repeat of last year’s final.
FNB Tuks Young Guns’ Jaco Pienaar is happy with the victory and how his charges defended, but believes that the team is not a finished product just yet.
“This was your typical first match of the season,” said Pienaar. “There were a lot of mistakes made by both teams and the heat did not help. We did not make use of our opportunities which is a huge negative as it could come back to haunt us later in the year.”
Although the Pretoria youngsters weren’t satisfied with their performance, Pienaar stated that there were positives for FNB Tuks to take from their first run out.
“It was good to start the season with a win,” said Pienaar. “Beating Kovsies will help to build confidence as we were the top two teams last year. We only gave away one try which was scored via a quick tap, so our defence was solid, as were our scrums.”
FNB UP-Tuks Young Guns will need to work on their execution ahead of their trip to face FNB Junior Maties next Monday. FNB Tuks will go into the match with no injury concerns as they seek a vital victory in Stellenbosch.
