With recent back-to-back FNB Player That Rocks awards in FNB UJ’s impressive run, Aphiwe Dyantyi is now seen as the side’s ‘main man’ as the star hopes to drive FNB UJ to their first title.

Aphiwe Dyantyi, who spent most of last season on the wings, has transformed and elevated his game to new heights thanks to the recent switch to inside centre. The mercurial backline player has taken this season by the scruff of the neck and inspired those around him in the way FNB UJ play rugby.

“I won’t take all the credit, I think the coaching staff are entrusting so much confidence in me and giving me the freedom to play my game,” he said. “How I want to play has played a huge part. My teammates backing me up with the decisions I make on the field has aided the way I’ve been playing as well. Being one of the senior players in the team, I have a lot of guys looking up to me and I have to take the initiative to lead.”

Born and raised in the Eastern Cape, Dyantyi is very passionate about the game and was quick to acknowledge the platform Varsity Cup has given him, particularly Steinhoff Koshuis Rugby.

“I’ll always have respect for koshuis rugby, as it laid a platform for me to live my passion and dream.” The talented young centre underlined the importance of a platform such as Steinhoff Koshuis Rugby to help aid young players into future stars.

FNB UJ are out to make history, and are on verge of making it into the top four, with the ultimate goal being winning the Varsity Cup for the first time.

“The team is getting better, the team chemistry is getting better and the guys’ confidence is growing and now more than ever we believe we can go far in the tournament, but we still need to keep calm heads and not get ahead of ourselves and take each game as it comes.”

Dyantyi mentioned the importance of acknowledgment to those that give you opportunities in life and goes by the saying: “Life is about taking the opportunities that come your way, and I’m just grateful to be part of a team where I can enjoy and fully express myself.”
