The newcomers to the FNB Varsity Young Guns are aware of the massive task they have in front of them.
Wits Young Guns coach Riaan Van der Merwe has expressed his excitement about the challenge ahead and he accepts that this season is going to be important for his side to grow as players.
“This year is still a learning curve and we are looking to change our goals a bit from what we initially set up,” he told varsitycup.co.za.
“We are very new in the Varsity Cup and the recruitment side has been fairly difficult.
“Recruitment wise, I don’t think we went out and did what we would have wanted to,” Van der Merwe added.
The aim for Van der Merwe is to get the players playing the kind of rugby that is positive and is to a plan.
“We want to go onto the field and see that what he have worked on in practices work in a match situation,” Van der Merwe mentioned.
The coach is aware of the step up that his players have to make and hopes that he can provide them with the necessary skills needed to elevate their careers.
The coach said: “We want to be positive and see the boys grow and prepare them so that in two or three years time they can make the step up to Varsity Cup level.”
The Wits Young Guns get their campaign underway when they take on FNB NWU-Pukke on Monday, February 25 in Potchefstroom.
