FNB UWC ShowUs campaign for 2025 tackles blood cancer

The FNB UWC Caracals are proving that rugby is more than just a game - it’s a platform for transformation. In an inspiring move, the University of the Western Cape (UWC) Rugby team joined forces with DKMS Africa, a global leader in the fight against blood cancer.
This partnership, rooted in UWC’s legacy in social justice, is a powerful testament to the team’s commitment to making a difference beyond the rugby field. The side has already kicked off a winning campaign with three victories in its first three Varsity Shield matches.
DHL Stormers and Springbok Sevens legend, Seabelo Senatla, as a proud DKMS Africa ambassador, recognised the immense influence of the Caracals in their community. “Rugby is about more than just the game; it’s about building a community and making a difference off the field,” said Senatla. “That’s why I approached UWC Rugby. To me, heroism isn’t just about scoring tries - it’s about stepping up where it truly counts,” he said.
“By collaborating with DKMS Africa, they’re not only raising awareness but actively encouraging individuals to register as potential lifesavers for patients battling blood cancer and blood disorders.”

UWC Rugby Head Coach, Paul Treu, a mentor to Senatla in his formative years, fully supported the initiative, recognising the powerful role athletes played in shaping society.
“What Seabelo is doing with DKMS Africa is truly inspiring,” Treu said. “Bringing awareness to something as critical as blood cancer and stem cell donation is lifesaving work. As athletes, we have a platform, and it’s important to use it for causes that matter,” he said.
“Our players have a unique opportunity to spread this message - not just among their teammates, but within their communities and beyond. Watching Seabelo grow into the leader he is today proves how sport can be a force for good.”
The collaboration was warmly welcomed by DKMS Africa’s Head of Corporate Communications and Community Engagement, Palesa Mokomele, who expressed deep appreciation for UWC Rugby’s support.“Having UWC Rugby on board is a powerful step forward in raising awareness for blood cancer and stem cell donation.
Their support is crucial in spreading our message and helping save lives. We are grateful to the team for embracing this cause,” said Mokomele.
