VarsityCup.co.za content contributors Dan Lombard and Bronwen Bain select the standout players from Sunday’s matches at Tuks Stadium.
MAURITZ MARITZ (FNB TUT VIKINGS)
After being sidelined for eight weeks due to a broken cheekbone, the FNB TUT co-captain led from the front in his return to action. The agile centre created several opportunities for his teammates and scored a 40m interception try on his 21st birthday.
MPUMELELO HLEFANE (FNB DUT RHINOS)
The Rhinos captain and prop epitomises his team’s ‘never-say-die’ attitude. His work rate and physicality are inspiring to see and he played a big part in their impressive scrummaging performance against the Vikings.
LUNATHI NXELE (FNB CPUT)
The Tekkies No 12 had a field day against the FNB UKZN Impi, scoring two brilliant tries while defending the inside channel to a tee. His efforts, despite being shown a yellow card in the second half, were a major factor in FNB CPUT’s ruthless dominance of their KZN opponents.
LITHA NKULA (FNB WSU ALL BLACKS)
Nkula's game against FNB Rhodes was head and shoulders above quality! The wing’s two tries and seven conversions, coupled with his cool and collected ability to lead his charges, certainly contributed towards their impressive victory.
LISOLETHU VALISI (FNB WSU ALL BLACKS)
Valisi has all the qualities of a top-class flyhalf. He organised his backline so effectively against FNB Rhodes that the All Blacks were a constant threat whenever they secured possession. Valisi’s try – one of nine – meant the result after half-time was never in doubt or even remotely close.
