Gemmies ready to make their mark in FNB Varsity Shield debut

Updated: Feb 12

Sol Plaatje University’s rugby team, the Gemmies, are set to make history as they step onto the field for their inaugural Varsity Shield 2025 campaign. The Kimberley-based side earned their spot after beating FNB TUT in the promotion-relegation match after last year's tournament concluded.

As a young and ambitious squad, they have already proven their potential, showcasing resilience and commitment in their journey to the competition.

Head coach Jonathan Francke, a former professional player for Griquas, has played a crucial role in shaping this team. Most players have only played together since early 2024, but they have fast-tracked their development, achieving in one year what was initially planned as a three-year project.

The team’s success comes from clear goals and strong commitment. “We set out objectives early on, and the players bought into the long-term vision. Sacrifices made, both on and off the field, have been key,” Francke explained.

Qualifying for the Varsity Shield was no easy feat. With just 30 players, a demanding schedule, and injuries, the Gemmies overcome significant challenges, including facing TUT twice in the qualification process.

Under Francke’s guidance, the team developed an exciting playing style. “Our main goal is an attacking game, but that starts with hard work on defence,” he noted. The off-season was spent building strength, refining ball-handling skills, and mentally preparing for the competition.

While the team has standout players, Francke emphasises that success comes from unity. “We have players with the ability to stand out, but they still require the team to be the best they can be,” he said.

Being part of the Varsity Shield is a major milestone for the university and a boost for the Kimberley community. “The support has been fantastic. Everyone wants us to succeed,” Francke shared.

As they enter their first Varsity Shield campaign, the Gemmies aim to make an impact and retain their place in the competition. “Our goal is a successful tournament and staying in the competition next year,” Francke affirmed.

With determination and unity, the Gemmies are ready to take on this challenge and prove they belong on the Varsity Shield stage.
