FNB UFH are gearing up for the 2024 FNB Varsity Cup Women’s tournament with confidence, having secured victories in all their friendly matches against experienced teams.
UFH head coach Ntyatyambo Mkhafu expressed his satisfaction after two months of rigorous preparation. Despite some challenges, he says he is optimistic and that the depth of the squad is a significant advantage.
"Unfortunately, we had an issue with experienced players not returning to the team due to academic issues, but having a large squad helped us a lot. We also had the problem of new players who had never played before, but we can't turn them away, rugby is about improvement, and they will undoubtedly learn with time."
Mkhafu says they are focused on surpassing last year's performance and are approaching the upcoming season with a game-by-game mindset. Despite obstacles, the team's determination and preparation reflect their commitment to making strides in 2024.
According to Mkhafu, Sivuyiseko Makhomazi, Buyekezo Mdliki, and Lilitha Vakalisa are the players to watch out for, having all served as captains before. He says the trio will play a pivotal role in ensuring a successful and memorable season for UFH.
