Witsies seek better start ahead of FNB Varsity Cup’s Juskei Derby

Wits University is set to leave no stone unturned as they kick off their 2025 Varsity Cup campaign against provincial rivals FNB UP-Tuks on Monday evening. Head coach Hugo van As is confident in his team’s preparation despite some challenges at the end of 2024 due to exams and the December break.

“We got back on track in January with a couple of friendly matches that went well and helped us achieve what we had set out for ourselves,” Van As said.

Wits has high expectations, driven by a strong desire to improve on last season.

“We aim to perform well and see what opportunities arise as the tournament progresses.”

The squad is well-balanced, featuring a mix of senior and junior players. While Wits lost some members due to the Varsity Cup’s new age rule, they have welcomed fresh talent from their junior ranks and the Golden Lions system.

“We are excited about the balance in our group,” Van As said.

Several players are expected to make an impact this season.

“Our captain and vice-captain, Setshaba Mokoena and Josh van Vreden, will always stand out. We also rely on the experience of tight-head prop Sibu Shongwe. Among the younger talents, lock JD Hattingh and Thomas Beling are promising prospects. In the backline, Dustyn Holmes and Lions junior player Tirhani Masondo bring plenty of excitement,” the coach noted.

Wits has often shown potential in the Varsity Cup but fallen short. However, Van As believes this year’s squad will bring something different.

“You can expect Wits to be brave and play without fear. We are determined to leave everything on the field, compete for the full 80 minutes, and live up to our reputation as a team that fights.”

The Witsies kick off their campaign at 19:00 on Monday at the Wits Rugby Stadium in the highly anticipated Juskei Derby against UP-Tuks.
